Fire alarms are positioned in every building because they save people’s lives. They generate sound when they detect the presence of a fire (some via heat and others via smoke), so that even if you can not physically see the flames, you have time to react. Everyone should be aware of the procedures involved when a fire alarm begins to sound. Sometimes, they can go off due to someone burning their toast in the staff kitchen but fully working fire alarms are a necessity. Its a legal requirement that every building must have a fully functional fire alarms and your workplace is no exception.
Health & Safety
The health and safety of the people in your building is of the highest priority and no one should be put at risk due to faulty fire alarms. The loss of an employee or a tenant due to a fire is hopefully something you should never have to experience. With this being said, please be sure to keep all of your fire alarms up to date and serviced regularly in order to assure people’s safety. Fire alarms are necessary in buildings because they inform everyone of the presence of danger. These alarms let people know in the quickest way possible.
Fire Safety Procedures
Fire alarms warn people of the presence of a fire and may even help prevent a few of them if people react fast enough to the source. However, fire alarms do not stop fires. You need to have procedures in place in order for employees to vacate the premises swiftly & efficiently. You should walk, not run, to the nearest exit in an order to evacuate the building when the fire alarm goes off. Leave all belongings behind – nothing is more important than your life.
If there are objects obstructing the pathways towards the exit please move them out of the way so that people behind you are not hindered by them. Once outside, people should gather at a pre-determined, designated spot that is a safe distance away from the building. Everyone should then be accounted for and all that is left to do is wait for the fire department to arrive.
