Fire Evacuation Compliance Legal Requirements

The Fire Service Act 1975 [sec 21A] and Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 1992 set out the criteria and requirements for the implementation and maintenance of Fire Evacuation Schemes and Evacuation Procedures.

Virtually every building [not being a residential dwelling or small residential complex] will require an approved and managed Fire Evacuation Scheme or the provision of a Fire Evacuation Procedure. A Fire Evacuation Scheme is requiredin any building where:

• Facilities for employment are provided for more than 10 people
  
• 100 or more people can gather or assemble for any purpose
  
• Accommodation is provided for more than 5 people [ in more than 3 household units ]
  
• Hazardous substances are stored or processed.
