Emergency Lighting Inspection and Testing Regulations

According to British Standard BS5266, it is recommended that Emergency Lighting inspection and testing frequencies are as follows:

• Monthly: An operational test for a short period (a maximum of one quarter or the rated duration).
  
• Six Monthly: Test for at least one hour for 3 hour rated systems.
  
• Annual: Test for 3 hours continued discharge.

During each test, the emergency lights should be checked for correct operation. After testing, the electricity supply should be restored and then checked to ensure the emergency lighting system is charging correctly. All testing and results should be documented in log books on site.

NOTE: The current EU regulations states, that emergency lighting testing should be undertaken monthly and annually, i.e. a full discharge test. Therefore the Six Monthly check is no longer compulsory, but it is still highly recommended.
